Russell Hill displayed a flare as halfback on Thiel’s All-Time Football Team during his freshman year. He figured prominently in the undefeated team of 1950, as Thiel piled up 206 points while allowing its opponents only 13 points.
During the 1950 season, he had four games in which he gained over 100 yards. He accounted for over 200 yards in a game against Geneva – 123 rushing yards, a 30-yard kickoff return and a 58-yard punt return. He scored six touchdowns in a 58-0 win against Grove City, a school record at the time of his induction. Hill led the 1950 team in total offense and was named to the Geneva, Westminster and Grove City All-Opponent Team.
After returning from his service in the Korean War, he again playing a prominent role in the football fortunes of 1954 and 1955. The 1954 football team finished the season 5-2. Hill scored six touchdowns and amassed over 600 rushing yards. He helped lead the 1955 team to a 6-1 record, losing to a powerful Westminster team 20-7. Hill averaged 7.4 yards in 85 carries. He piled up 624 yards and scoring four touchdowns. He won a position on both the All-State and All-Tri State teams.
