Academics and Athletics in Balance

Division III provides a well-rounded college experience that balances academics, competitive athletics and opportunities throughout campus life.

  • Balances academics, competitive athletics and other campus opportunities.
  • Uses the same admission standards, academic standards, housing and support services as the general student body.
  • Structures seasons and eligibility standards to minimize conflicts between athletics and academics.
  • Does not award financial aid based on athletics ability.
  • Promotes sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, perseverance and leadership.
  • Provides a competitive environment for student-athletes who play for the love of the game.

No Athletic Scholarships

Thiel College competes in NCAA Division III and does not award financial aid based on athletic ability. Students may qualify for academic merit awards, need-based assistance, grants, loans and employment opportunities.

Financial Aid Overview

Financial Aid Scholarships Educational funds that do not require repayment and may be awarded for academic success, service, leadership and other accomplishments.
Financial Aid Grants Federal, state and college funds that do not require repayment and are primarily based on financial need.
Financial Aid Loans Educational funds that must be repaid and may be available to students or parents.
Financial Aid Student Employment Primarily on-campus work opportunities that allow students to earn money toward college expenses.

How Financial Need Is Determined

Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid produces a Student Aid Index, which colleges use to determine eligibility for need-based aid such as grants and loans. Financial-aid packages commonly include a combination of gift aid and self-help aid.
