Alan R. McCartney was a four-year letter winner in football and wrestling. While at Thiel, McCartney received conference, district and national recognition in football as well as conference recognition in wrestling. In 1969, he received the Outstanding College Athlete of America Award.

After graduation, McCartney went to work as a social studies instructor at Sackets Harbor Central School in New York. In 1971 and 1972, he was recognized as the outstanding running back on the New York Champion Watertown Red and Black Semi-Pro Football Team. In addition to teaching, he also coached football and basketball, winning conference and division titles in 1975-77 and 1977-79 respectively.
