Freshman opposite hitter
Regan Hess (Burlington, Wis./Wetosha Central) and senior middle hitter
Kyle Turkalj (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) both reached double-digit kill figures with 14 and 10, respectively. Freshman setter
Zack Rombach (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding) posted his first collegiate double-double with 21 assists and 11 digs, while junior outside hitter
Dylan Lasher (Ford City, Pa./Elderton) collected nine kills, five digs and two solo blocks.
For Ramapo, Ahjon Petty ignited the attack with 17 kills, while Nick Hrehovcik added 14. Andrew Balint kept the offense moving with 51 assists, while Kurt MacDonald and Balint chipped in 14 and 11 digs, respectively. Mike Kane reinforced the Roadrunners' front row on defense with three total blocks.
The first two sets were one-sided in nature, with the Roadrunners cruising to back-to-back 25-18 victories.
The third set was all Thiel, as the Tomcats raced out to a 12-6 lead before Ramapo called their first timeout. The Roadrunners were later forced to use their second timeout of the set after sophomore setter
Charlie Tindall (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes) registered back-to-back service aces to increase Thiel's lead to 17-9. The Tomcats took advantage of five Roadrunner attacking errors down the stretch to win the set, 25-16.
Neither side led by more than three points in the fourth stanza. The turning point in the set came after a solo block by Thiel's
Tyrieq Patton (Homestead, Pa./Steel Valley) tied the set at 24-24. The two sides traded points before a pair of Roadrunner errors undid Ramapo and gave the Tomcats momentum heading into the fifth and final set.
The fifth set was, unfortunately, all Ramapo, as it scored eight of the game's first 11 points. Turkalj broke up the run with two kills and a block to make it 9-6, but the Roadrunners continued to make plays when they needed to most and won the set, 15-13.
The Tomcats will take on #14-ranked Baruch College to close out the 2014 Carthage Tournament Sunday.
