Thiel takes first set of season from Carthage, but falls in 4 sets

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Tomcats fell to the fourth-ranked Carthage College Red Men 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Championship Tournament Friday afternoon at Thiel's Beeghly Gymnasium. 

The Red Men won by set scores of 25-17, 26-28, 25-21 and 25-23. The second set win by the Tomcats marks the first time in four meetings this season that Thiel has taken a set from the fourth-ranked Red Men.

Carthage (24-7) entered the second-annual conference championship tournament as the number two seed out of the West Division and faced a Tomcat squad (20-12) that came in as the third seed out of the East.

Jon Storm finished with a game-high 22 kills and six digs for Carthage and Jim Schultz added 15 kills and seven digs. Connor Wexter distributed 59 assists and chipped in defensively with five digs while Mike Jebens totaled a team-best 17 digs.  

In what was his final match as a Tomcat, Dante McCoy (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) led the way with 16 kills and five digs. Corey Hamilton (Meadville, Pa./Maplewood) handed out 23 assists while registering six digs and Ian Phillips (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) posted a team-best 17 digs in the loss. 

The CVC Championship concludes Saturday with the championship match at 5 p.m.

The 2013 Tomcats set multiple school marks this season, including wins in a season (20) and consecutive wins (8).
