Thiel men’s volleyball team knocks off third-ranked Juniata, 3-1

HUNTINGDON, Pa. — The Thiel College men's volleyball team posted a come-from-behind 3-1 win over the AVCA poll No. 3-ranked Juniata Eagles Wednesday.

With the win the Tomcats matched their win total from a season ago by improving to 16-8 overall. They also extend their season-best win streak to six matches while marking the first time in the program's short history that they have defeated the Eagles. It is also the second time this season that Thiel has knocked off a ranked opponent.

The Tomcats dropped their first and only set of the match when the Eagles took the first game, 25-17. The Tomcats rebounded as a Michael Whitelock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) service ace on set point gave his team a 25-21 win in the second set. The third set was all Thiel as four of Dante McCoy (Reading, Pa./Holy Name)'s team-high 16 kills paced the Tomcats to a 25-18 win and a 2-1 match lead.

In the decisive fourth set, the two sides were deadlocked at 20-20 before a McCoy kill on a pass from Charlie Tindall (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes) gave the Tomcats the lead, one that they never surrendered with a kill by John Turner (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) that gave Thiel a 25-21 win.

Three Tomcats registered double-digit kills, as Whitelock and Dylan Lasher (Ford City, Pa./Elderton) joined McCoy with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. McCoy led the Tomcats with eight digs defensively while Lasher finished with seven digs. Tindall collected a team-high 23 assists and two kills, while Corey Hamilton (Meadville, Pa./Maplewood) added 21 assists and four digs.

The Tomcats return to action on Friday March 29, when they travel to Keuka, N.Y. to take on Keuka College. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
