GREENVILLE, Pa. - The Thiel College men's volleyball won a pair of matches Sunday to close out the 2013 Thiel College Tournament. Thiel downed Penn State Behrend, 3-2 (25-23, 17-25, 20-25, 23-25, 15-11), then went on to defeat Penn State Altoona, 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-16) to end day two of the tournament.
Against Penn State Behrend,
Dante McCoy (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) and
John Turner (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) led the way for Thiel offensively, as they fired 14 and 11 kills, respectively. McCoy registered his first double-double of the season by posting a team-high 12 digs.
Evan Proksell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) and
Andrew Pohlod (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) each chipped in ten kills, while
Corey Hamilton (Meadville, Pa./Maplewood) dished out 50 assists and added nine digs. Defensively,
Michael Whitelock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) added 4 blocks, including a solo block to give the Tomcats the win in set five.
In the win over Penn State Altoona, Turner and
Andrew Pohlod (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) each registered 10 kills, while
Charlie Tindall (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes) added six kills, 15 assists and five digs.
The Tomcats went 3-1 at their own tournament, with only the loss to #2 team in NCAA DIII, Carthage College, as the only blemish on its record. Thiel is 4-1 overall this season.
The Tomcats are back in action in two weeks, when they host the CVC Crossover weekend on February 9, 2013.
