WAYNESBURG, Pa. – After suffering a 4-1 game one loss to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Waynesburg University Saturday afternoon, a complete-game effort by
Bobby Hillier (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark) and a seventh inning RBI single by
Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler) in game two helped the Tomcats win 5-4 and preserve a doubleheader split with the Yellow Jackets.
Ben Oviatt was outstanding in the opener for Waynesburg, improving to 7-1 on the season after allowing one run on seven hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout in 7.0 innings. Andrew Rose had a pair of hits and a RBI in the Yellow Jacket victory.
Waynesburg (15-9, 6-6 PAC) scored a pair of runs in the second to assume a 2-0 lead and added another in the third to go up by a 3-0 margin.
Billy Roosa (Salamanca, N.Y./Ellicottville) led off the fourth inning with a home run to left field, his second of the season, and cut the Yellow Jacket lead to two, 3-1. Waynesburg added another run in the sixth to close out the scoring at 4-1.
Roosa finished with a pair of hits in the loss for Thiel (11-13, 4-5 PAC).
Hillier made his first start of the season for the Tomcats in game two and gave up four runs (1 earned) on six hits in the complete-game victory.
Phil Double (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) and King each had two RBI for the visitors in the win.
Waynesburg again assumed the early lead in game two, scoring twice in the bottom of the first. Double's two out, two-run home run in the fourth tied the game at 2-2 but a Tomcat fielding miscue in the bottom of the frame lead to a run for the Yellow Jackets and a 3-2 lead.
RBIs from
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and King in the fifth gave the Tomcats a 4-2 advantage, but Brendan Scioscia's RBI groundout in the bottom half of the fifth tied the game at 4-4.

Dan Gainey (Girard, Ohio/Girard) from second to put the visiting Tomcats up 5-4. Hillier retired the Yellow Jackets batters in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure his first win of the season.
Bobby Hartman and Tim Chilcote each finished with a hit and a RBI in the loss. Zach Kreke was dealt the loss after allowing five runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
Thiel is back in action on Monday, April 9 when they travel to non-conference foe Penn State Behrend for a single nine-inning contest. Opening pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
