GREENVILLE, Pa. –
Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) posted his team-best 13th multiple hit game while
Nick Rossmiller (Butler, Pa./Butler) improved to 5-1 on the season as the Tomcat baseball team earned a 7-3 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over visiting Waynesburg University Thursday afternoon at Tomcat Park.
Steininger finished 3-for-4 with three RBI for Thiel (10-2, 3-4 PAC), improving his season batting average to .451.
Bobby Hillier (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark) was the only other Tomcat with multiple hits in the win, finishing 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Rossmiller threw 8.0 strong innings for the Tomcats and allowed three runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
Cody Northcott (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) pitched a perfect ninth in relief.
Brendan Scioscia had a pair of hits to lead the Waynesburg (14-8, 5-5 PAC) at the plate. Kyle Sasala, Nick Berdine and Tim Chilcote each added a RBI.
Anthony Longo fell to 3-2 with the loss, allowing six runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts and three walks. Sean Boyle entered in the sixth in relief of Longo and gave up one run on a pair of hits.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Sasala drove the second pitch of the contest deep over the left field fence for his second home run of the season.
Steininger's RBI single and a
Billy Roosa (Salamanca, N.Y./Ellicottville) RBI groundout in the bottom of the first quickly helped the Tomcats move in front of the Yellow Jackets, 2-1. Thiel scored four more in the third, keyed by RBI singles by Steininger and
Phil Double (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley), and took a 6-1 lead heading into the fourth.
A Steininger RBI single in the fourth pushed the Tomcat led to six, 7-1, but Waynesburg capitalized on a pair of Thiel miscues in the field in the sixth to get back to within four, 7-3.
Rossmiller worked hitless seventh and eighth innings before handing the ball over to Northcott for the ninth.
Thiel travels to Waynesburg for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 7 to wrap up their three-game series. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
