Dixon's Walk-Off Winner Highlights Baseball's Split With Thomas More

GREENVILLE, Pa. — The Tomcat baseball team took the first game of a double header with Thomas More 8-7 and dropped game two 7-5 in extra innings on Saturday afternoon in Greenville, Pa.

In the first game, the Tomcats used a two RBI walk-off single by Ryan Dixon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) to take the contest by a score of 8-7. The Tomcats got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when an RBI single by Billy Roosa (Salamanca, N.Y./Ellicottville) drove in Doug Farley (Linesville, Pa./Linesville) to make the score 1-0. They didn't hold the lead for long as Thomas More came right back, scoring runs in the second, third, and fourth innings to take the lead 4-1.

The Tomcats would then cut the lead to 4-2 when Phil Double (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) scored off the bat of Ryan Dixon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth.

Thomas More came right back in the top of the fifth inning as they struck twice to extend the lead to 6-2. Then, in the bottom of the fifth with Doug Farley (Linesville, Pa./Linesville) on first, Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler) blasted his first home run of the season over the left field fence to cut into the Saint lead at 6-4. However, Thomas More would add one more run in the top of the sixth to go up three runs at 7-4.

Down to their final three outs, the Tomcat batting order responded. The first four hitters all reached base in the bottom of the seventh as Farley and King led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After a walk issued to Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) loaded the bases, Double drove in two runs with a double to right field to cut the score to one run at 7-6. After a fly out and an intentional walk issued to Brock Porter (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg), Dixon came up huge with his first walk-off hit of the season, hitting a single to right field that scored both Steininger and Double to give Thiel the victory 8-7.

Farley (3-for-4), King (2-for-3), and Double (2-for-3) all had nice games as each had multiple hits in the contest.

Game two saw the Tomcats jump out to a quick lead again. After Thomas More score a run in both the top of the first and top of the second innings, Thiel Exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second.  After an RBI hit by Weston Snyder (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern), and a successful suicide squeeze play by Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and Dixon, Farley knocked in two RBIs with a triple to right center that scored Trinch and Snyder. Farley was then chased in on a bunt single by King to make the score 5-2.

Thomas More would then begin to chip away at the three run lead with single runs in third, fourth, and sixth innings to tie the game at five. It would then take three extra innings to determine a winner as Thomas More's Andrew Thole hit a two-run home run in the top of the tenth inning to give the Saints the 7-5 victory.

King had another great game at the plate going 3-for-5 in the contest. Trinch also reached base twice (2-for-4) as the only other Tomcat with multiple hits in the game.

The rubber match between the Saints and Tomcats is scheduled to be played Sunday, April 29. The single, nine-inning contest at Tomcat Park is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start time.
