GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Tomcat baseball team used a huge seven run first inning to defeat the Wolverines of Grove City College 17-5 on Saturday afternoon in Greenville, Pa.
Seven different Tomcats recorded multiple hits in the win and they were paced by
Doug Farley (Linesville, Pa./Linesville),
Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg), and
Weston Snyder (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) who each tallied three RBIs. Farley went 3-for-6, Steininger registered a 2-for-3 day, and Snyder finished the contest going 2-for-4 from the dish. Other players collecting multiple hits included
Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler) (2-for-4),
Phil Double (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) (3-for-4),
Ryan Dixon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) (2-for-2) and
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) (3-for-5).
Thiel (14-18) used the first inning of play as the catalyst for their victory as the first four hitters of the game reached base safely. Highlighted by Steininger's RBI triple, the Tomcats brought 11 batters to the plate in the frame, and jumped out to a 7-0 lead.
After Thiel put up two more runs in the bottom of the second on RBIs by Snyder and Dixon, Grove City added two runs of their own to cut the lead to 9-2. However, Thiel's bats could not be silenced as the posted four more runs in the next two frames with RBIs on a sac fly by Steininger and hits by Farley and King to extend the lead to 13-2.
Thiel would add another run in the bottom of the fifth on Dixon's second RBI of the day before the Wolverines posted three runs in the top of the six. Not wanting to be outdone, the Tomcats came right back in the bottom of the sixth as they scored three runs, including a two-run double by
Brock Porter (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg), and an RBI by Snyder to round out the scoring at 17-5.
Nick Rossmiller (Butler, Pa./Butler) got the win for the Tomcats and improved his record to a team-best 6-2 as he pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing six hits while striking out three.
Due to inclement weather, the second game of the double-header has been postponed to Tuesday April 24
th at 4 p.m.
