ALLIANCE, Ohio – The University of Mount Union used nine pitchers and used a two-out, RBI double in the fourth to secure a 2-1 victory over the visiting Tomcats Sunday afternoon.
Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) finished 3-for-4 on the day to lead the Thiel (9-10) batters. It was his sixth three-plus hit day of the season and first since a 3-for-4 effort in the Tomcat's 10-8 loss to Monmouth College on March 14.
Weston Snyder (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) went 2-for-4 with Thiel's lone RBI while
Phil Double (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) also added a pair of hits.
Kyle Mohr (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) was the hard-luck loser, allowing two runs (1 earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 5.1 innings of work.
Mike Pica (Monessen, Pa./Monessen) threw 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Connor Mathis' RBI single in the bottom of the first gave the host Purple Raiders (15-6) a 1-0 lead.
Snyder's RBI double in the fourth scored Double from first and knotted the game at 1-1.
After retiring the inning's first two batters via the strikeout, a walk and wild pitch by Mohr preceded an Anthony Morino RBI double to give Mount Union a 2-1 edge, proving to be they would need to hold off the Tomcats.
The duo of Mohr and Pica limited the Purple Raiders to just eight hits, but Mathis and Morino each tallied two while recording a RBI in the win.
Gino Ceriani picked up the win despite allowing two hits and the Tomcat's lone run of the contest. Brandon Bell notched the save by tossing the ninth inning.
Thiel is back in action on Tuesday, April 3 as it hosts local rival Allegheny College. The single, nine-inning contest is slated to get underway at 4 p.m.
