Tomcats Battle Back With Game Two Win, Force Split With Wisconsin Lutheran

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After watching Wisconsin Lutheran College rally from a run down with three in the bottom of the sixth to post an 8-6 game one win, the Tomcat baseball squad used a five-run second to register an 8-1 victory in game two at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers.

Game one saw Thiel (4-3) score three in the second and two more in the third to jump out to a 5-3 lead after three innings. Wisconsin Lutheran (1-3) scratched out two runs in the fourth to tie the game at 5-5 before an Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler) RBI single in the sixth helped the Tomcats regain the 6-5 lead.

A Sam Mattheis one out RBI single tied the game back up at 6-6 and a bases-loaded RBI walk to Garrick Day, followed up by a bases-load hit by pitch, gave the Warriors the 8-6 win.

In his first start for the Tomcats Billy Roosa (Salamanca, N.Y./Ellicottville) went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored. Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) finished 1-for-3 with a two-run double in the second while Phil Double (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) and King each added a pair of hits.

Alex Yoder (Canton, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas) had a no decision in his first collegiate start, allowing five runs (4 E) on five hits with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Mike Pica (Monessen, Pa./Monessen) suffered the loss, allowing three runs (2 E) on two hits 2.2 innings of work.

Jacob Redman led the Warriors at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Wisconsin Lutheran starter Josh Smith also worked to a no decision, giving up six runs (6 E) on 12 hits in 5.2 innings. Steve Gustafson picked up the win in relief after limiting the Tomcats to just one hit over the final 1.1 innings.

Game two saw the combination of Kyle Mohr (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) and Parker Meyers (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) limit the Warriors to just five hits in the 8-1 win. Mohr picked up his first collegiate win after surrendering one run on three hits with four strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Meyers earned his first collegiate save after working the final 2.0 scoreless innings.

Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) finished 3-for-4 with a double, three runs, two RBI and a stolen base. Weston Snyder (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Trinch finished 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles. Roosa also went 1-for-4 with a RBI and stolen base.

Doug Martin had two hits for Wisconsin Lutheran in the loss.

Thiel is back in action on Wednesday, March 14 against Monmouth College. The single nine-inning contest is scheduled to be played at Terry Park #1 at 4 p.m.
