CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – The Tomcat baseball team fell in both games of a double header to the Saints of Thomas More College on Saturday in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
Game one saw a great pitchers dual as Tomcat senior
James Teyssier (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) went up against the Saints' Aaron Carmack. Neither pitcher would give up an earned run on the day. However, due to Tomcat miscues in the field, the Saints were able to defeat Thiel 2-0.
Thomas More picked up the first unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning as David Kennett scored on a throwing error. They would follow that run up with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Brandon Nutini drove in Nick Ryan to give the Saints the 2-0 lead.
Both Teyssier and Carmack had strong days on the mound as each went the distance for his respective team. Teyssier gave up just six hits in six innings of work while striking out four, while Carmack went seven innings giving up seven hits and striking out six.
Offensively, the Tomcats were led by senior centerfielder
Luke Johnson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester) and junior right fielder
Phil Double (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) who had two hits apiece in the game.
The bats came alive in game two as Thomas More defeated Thiel in the second game of the double header 12-6.
Thiel jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After a walk to sophomore left fielder
Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) and a single by junior catcher
Brock Porter (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg), junior third baseman
Bobby Hillier (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark) hit his fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot, to make the game 3-0. Thiel then added another run on an RBI single by senior first baseman
Jake Thomas (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) to extend the lead to 4-0.
After the teams traded runs in the third inning, with the Tomcats run coming on a RBI double by Steininger, Thiel added another run in the top of the fourth driven in by Johnson to make the score 6-1.
The Saints would come back quickly as they added three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on back-to-back RBI singles. The first, a one RBI hit by Andrew Thole; and the second, a two RBI single by Ryan Darner to cut the Tomcat lead to 6-4.
The Saints would then take control as they added eight runs to their total between the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings. The big highlight of the eight-run swing was a two-run homer by Thole, which gave him his fourth in two games, and made the score 12-6. The Saints then went on to shut down Thiel in the top of the seventh to take game two by the same score.
Thiel was led offensively by Hillier in game two. He was 2-for-4 on the day with a home-run and three RBIs.
The Tomcats will finish out the season with a three-game series against PAC foe Bethany College on Friday May 6 and Saturday May 7. The nine-inning contest scheduled at Tomcat Park in Greenville on Friday will begin at 3 p.m.
