CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. — The Tomcat baseball team was defeated by a score of 9-8 by the Saints of Thomas More College in a nine-inning contest on Friday in Crestview Hills.
The Saints were able to strike first in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single by Andrew Thole to make the score 1-0.
Thomas More would then add four more runs over the next four innings. The Saints scored a single run in both the third and fourth innings on wild pitches and then added two more runs on a two-run homer by Thole to make the score 5-0.
Thiel would start a comeback in the top of the sixth inning as they plated three runs. Sophomore
Jarod Nanna (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh) singled in junior
Phil Double (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) and then senior
Luke Johnson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester) hit a two-run double to right center which scored Nanna and junior
Brock Porter (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) to make the score 5-3.
The Tomcats then added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning on a two-run homer by
Phil Double (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) to tie the game at five.
Thomas More would take the lead back in the bottom of the seventh as Thole led of the inning with a solo home run, his second of the game, and then Tomcat pitching walked in the second run of the inning to give the Saints the 7-5 lead.
Thiel would then take the lead for the first time in the game in the top of the eighth inning. After two errors by Thomas More defense put two Tomcats on base, senior
Jake Thomas (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) cleared the bases with a three-run home run to give Thiel the lead 8-7.
Lighting would strike for a third time in the bottom of the eighth inning as Thole homered for the third time in the ball game, driving in two runs and giving Thomas More the victory 9-8.
Offensively, the Tomcats were led by Double who went 3-for-4 on the day and drove in two runs. Thomas also added three RBIs on the day.
Thomas More was led by Thole who homered three times and had six RBIs on the day.
The Tomcats and the Saints will continue play on Saturday as they will compete in a double header in Crestview Hills. First pitch of game one is scheduled for one p.m.
