Greenville, Pa. -- Thel's tough schedule continued on the second day of the AVI Invitational as they played two teams in the top ten in the nation.
A day after the Tomcats fell in three sets to #4 Nazareth College, they were defeated 3-0 by the tenth ranked Carthage College Redmen and were defeated in four sets by Juniata College, the second ranked team in the country.
Thiel started off play at 11 a.m. against Carthage. The Redmen came out tough as they took the first set 25-19. They then went on to beat the Tomcats in second set (25-20) and the third set (26-24) to earn the sweep.
Sophomore outside hitter
Dante McCoy (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) led the way for the Tomcat offense as he recorded 20 kills in the game. Freshman setter
Corey Hamilton (Meadville, Pa./Maplewood) also helped lead the offense as he recorded 31 assists in the game. On the defensive side of the ball, the Tomcats were led by freshman libero
Jacob Schultz (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) who had eight digs.
In the second game of the day the Tomcats took on the second ranked Juniata Eagles. Thiel stayed right with Juniata in the first game as they kept it close but fell 25-22 in game one. Thiel then bounced right back and took game two from the Eagles 28-26. However, the strength of the Eagles was too much for the Tomcats and they fell 25-11, 25-19 in the next two sets.
McCoy once again led the Tomcats on offense as he had 23 of the team's 37 kills. With the two losses today, Thiel drops to 1-5 on the season. Their next game is Wednesday the 26th when they take on Elmira College at home. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
