WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team earned a doubleheader split against the Washington & Jefferson Presidents Saturday at Ross Memorial Park. The Tomcats took the first game, 6-4, before the Presidents' took the rubber match of the season series, 7-2.
Thiel is now 18-9 overall including a 10-5 mark in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while W&J moved its record to 15-8 with a 7-2 record in league play.
The Tomcats drew first blood in the first inning of game one when
Andrew Howard (Olney, Md./Sherwood) scored on an error, after reaching on a single to centerfield earlier in the frame.
Washington & Jefferson tacked on two runs over the next two innings before Thiel responded to even up the score at two-all in the fourth.
Thiel would plate the eventual game-winning score during a three-hit, three-run sixth inning which saw
Louie Parrilla (McKees Rocks/Sto Rox),
David Nypaver (Williamsfield, OH/Howland), and
Chad Ulogar (Willoughby, Ohio/South) cross home plate.
Howard and
Jake Thomas (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) led the 'Cats with two hits apiece, while Ulogar and Thomas each drove in a pair of runs.
Dave Diyorio (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) earned his sixth victory of the year by giving up one earned run in seven innings of work.
In the day cap, Thiel established a, 2-1, lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, but the Presidents' answered with six runs in their end of the inning to earn the, 7-2, league victory.
Cory Borland (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) took the loss for the Tomcats.
Thiel returns to action on Tuesday when they host Grove City for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
