MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Thiel College baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Waynesburg University, to run its Presidents' Athletic Conference to 3-0 on Saturday at Shilling Field in Morgantown, W.Va.
In game one Thiel edged the Yellow Jackets, 5-4, but the Tomcat offense caught fire in the second game as they pummeled Waynesburg, 12-3.
Thiel got a pair of complete games out of its starting pitchers in the seven inning contests.
Dave Diyorio (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) picked up the win in the first game, while
Cory Borland (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) got the “W” in the day cap.
A pair of homers highlighted Thiel's offensive effort in the first game.
Jake Thomas (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) lifted a solo shot to left-centerfield in the second inning to give the 'Cats an early, 3-0, lead. In the sixth inning
Eric Boylan (McKees Rocks/Sto Rox) hit a two-run homer to score the eventual winning run.
In the second game, the Tomcats used an excellent offensive outing to supplement the superlative pitching provided by Borland, to earn their 11th win of the season.
Shortstop
Chad Ulogar (Willoughby, Ohio/South) paced the Thiel bats with a 4-for-5 day at the plate. Ulogar scored two runs and batted in one more.
Right fielder Dave Nypaver also put on a strong showing at the dish, notching three hits in four at bats, while knocking in two runs and scoring one more.
Thiel (11-3; 3-0 PAC) visits Bethany on Tuesday.
