GREENVILLE, Pa. – No. 22 Thiel College opened the home side of its 2009 schedule with a, 9-5, win over Hiram at Tomcat Park on Wednesday.
The Tomcat offense pounded out 16 hits in the winning effort, while strong pitching held the Terriers to six hits.
Thiel erupted for all nine of its runs on ten hits in the third and fourth innings. Ten Tomcat batters came to the plate in the six-run third.
Junior first baseman
Justin Scarpitti (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep.) paced Thiel offensively, collecting three hits in five at bats, while scoring two runs and batting in one more.
Scarpitti along with senior leftfielder
Eric Boylan (McKees Rocks/Sto Rox) notched Thiel's only two extra-base hits of the game.
Boylan laced an RBI triple into right center field in the fourth, scoring
Andrew Howard (Olney, Md./Sherwood). Boylan came around to score on a Scarpitti single in the next at bat.
Thiel starter
Cory Borland (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands), who retired 13 of the 14 batters he faced in four innings of work, got the win.
Hiram scored all five of its runs in a messy three-error seventh. None of the Terrier runs were earned.
Thiel (8-3) opens its Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule at 3 p.m. on Friday when it hosts the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets.
