UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio (March 22) -- The Thiel College Baseball team fell 6-2 at John Carroll University in a non-conference clash from Schweickert Field Sunday afternoon.
The Tomcats dip to 3-11 (1-1 PAC) while the Blue Streaks rise to 11-5 (0-0 NCAC). The showdown was the first between the two sides since 2016.
Hewitt Wilt (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) started for Thiel and worked the first three innings scoreless. The home side got on the board with 2 unearned runs against
Mason Suss (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) to lead 2-0. John Carroll added runs in each of the next three innings to lead 6-0.
Wilt had one strikeout in three innings while Suss had a pair. He was ultimately tagged with the loss to fall to 0-2.
The Thiel offense came alive in the eighth as
Colton Brightwell (Eighty Four, Pa./Bentworth) singled and
Joey Schimizzi (Willowick, Ohio/Willoughby South) had a pinch-hit double. Both came around to score later in the inning to make it 6-2 and spell the final as the Thiel bats went silent in the ninth.
Brightwell and Schimizzi each had a hit and run while
Calvin Cackowski (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) and
Justin Dubee (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) accounted for Thiel's two RBIs.
The Cats are back in action Tuesday at 1 p.m. for a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against W&J at home.
