Multi-Run Innings Propel Thiel over Baruch

FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Thiel College baseball team cruised to a 13-3 victory over the Baruch College Bearcats, as part of the 2015 Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Tomcats trailed after the first two and half innings after the Bearcats scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Then, the Tomcats recorded six runs in the bottom of the third inning highlighted by two triples in the inning. Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) hit a triple into the left field corner that scored Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and Ryan Brumbaugh (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington). After a single and a double that scored two, Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) tripled to right to score Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic).

Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) pushed another run across in the fourth to score Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan). The Tomcats then scored five runs in fifth inning to extend the Tomcat lead to 10 runs for a score of 12-2.

In the sixth inning, the Tomcats scored their 13th run off of an RBI single by Mitchell that scored Filippo Costanzo (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick).

The Bearcats scored a run in the eighth and then Riley Schwertz (Zelienople, Pa./Freedom) finished the Bearcats in the ninth to wrap up the win.

Mitchell ended the day with a 3-for-4 performance with a double, tripl, two runs scored and four runs batted in. Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) also had a three hit day with two RBIs. Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) had two hits and two RBIs. Parker Meyers (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) gave up two runs, both unearned with five strikeouts in six innings pitched. The bullpen gave up only one run and stuck out four in three innings of work.

The Tomcats (2-0) will be back in action Tuesday, March 10 as they play a doubleheader against the Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.
