Nick Schiavoni (Boiling Spring, Pa./Trinity) hit his first career home run, a two-run shot in the fifth inning, in his final game as a Tomcat to lead the Thiel College baseball team to a 9-6 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win over the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Tornadoes scored the first run of the contest in the bottom of the first to claim a 1-0 lead.
The Tomcats got on the scoreboard with a three spot in the top of the fourth, as sophomore
Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) advanced to first after being hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Junior
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) followed with a double to right field to advance Mitchell to third. Sophomore
Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) scored Mitchell from third with a sacrifice fly, and sophomore
Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) scored Trinch with a single to center field. Sophomore
Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) added a RBI-double, while sophomore
Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) added a RBI-single to put Thiel ahead 4-1.
Geneva answered with a three-run fifth inning to tie the contest at four.
The Tomcat bats went back to work in the top of the fifth, as Mitchell roped a one-out single to center. After Geneva recorded the second out of the inning, Doody tattooed a pitch into right field for a single to score Mitchell and give the Tomcats a one-run lead (5-4). Elko reached on an error that allowed Doody to score, and Smith notched his second RBI-double of the game to push Thiel's lead to three (7-4). Schiavoni cleared the bases with a two-run home run to left field to close out the scoring for the Tomcats.
The Golden Tornadoes chipped away at the Tomcats lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but that was as close as they would get.
Schiavoni went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run, a run scored and two RBIs. Smith went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs, while Elko notched a pair of base hits. Jeremy Herzog led Geneva with three base hits.
Sophomore Jaden Nozicka (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) picked up his first win of the season by throwing all seven innings, allowing six runs, four of which were earned, on 14 hits while striking out one. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out and will not be made up. The Tomcats concluded the 2014 season with a 15-22 overall record, including a 9-14 record in PAC play.
