Elko's one-hitter highlights Thiel's split with Bethany

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday against the Bethany College Bison. The Bison were victorious in game one, winning 4-3 in extras before the Tomcats rebounded behind starting pitcher Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) to win game two, 4-0.

The Tomcats led 2-0 after three innings in game one thanks to a two-run single in the third by Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan).

The Bison scored a run in the top of the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead, before a Thiel run in the home half of the sixth tied the contest at 3.

The score remained tied until the Bison plated a run in the top of the eighth to eek out the win in extra innings.

Mitchell led the Tomcats at the plate in game one, going 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs. Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and Brian Genco (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) each added a double.

Pat Duncan (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) was saddled with the loss in relief, allowing just one unearned run on two hits in two innings. Starting pitcher Parker Meyers (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) threw six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out four.

The Tomcats scored first again in game two, plating all four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 advantage.

Nick Schiavoni (Boiling Spring, Pa./Trinity) started things off in the second with a one-out infield single. Elko singled and both runners advanced a base on an error by Bethany's left fielder. Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) followed with a single that scored Schiavoni for the game's first run, and a sacrifice fly by Genco plated the second run of the inning. Michell doubled down the left field line to bring Koller in to score, and an error off the bat of Trinch later scored Mitchell from third.

Bethany got their first, and only, hit of the contest in the top of the third inning. Elko proceeded to retire 15-of-16 Bison hitters he faced, issuing a walk in the third, to pick up his third win of the season.

Elko needed just 83 pitches to complete the seven-inning one-hitter, striking out six and walking just two.

Mitchell went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and a RBI, while Koller was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.

Thiel (13-21, 7-13 PAC) returns to action Sunday when they travel to Bethany, W.Va. to take on the Bison in the third game of the three-game set. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
