Box Score 2 GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday against the Westminster College Titans. The Tomcats won the first game 5-4 before dropping game two in extra innings, 4-2.
The Tomcats led 1-0 after two innings in game one thanks to a RBI-groundout in the second by
Brian Snyder (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson). The Tomcats tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the third on a RBI-groundout by
Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin).
The Titans got in on the small ball, manufacturing a run of their own in the top of the fourth to draw within a run before a Thiel run in the bottom half of the fourth pushed the Tomcats' lead back to two, 3-1.
Westminster chipped away, scoring a run in the top of the fifth to make it 3-2. The Tomcats responded in the bottom of the sixth, as
Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) drew the bases loaded walk. The Titans, however, would not go quietly into the night, scoring two in the top half of the seventh to tie the contest 4-4.
Sam Passafiume (Medina, Ohio/Medina) opened the bottom of the seventh with a double to left center. A one-out fielder's choice advanced the runner to third, and
Brian Genco (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) came through with a RBI-single to give the Tomcats a walk-off win in game one.
Pat Duncan (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) picked up the win in relief, improving to 3-1 on the season by retiring the two batters he faced in the seventh.
It was the Titans who struck first in game two, plating a pair of runs in the second to take a 2-0 advantage.
Thiel tied the contest in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out single by
Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) that scored two.
The two sides remained in a stalemate until the ninth, when the Titans scored two runs on two hits and an error to seal the win.
Duncan was stuck with the hard luck loss in game two, throwing four innings and allowing just one earned run on two hits.
Genco went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader, including a double, with two runs scored and an RBI. Smith went 3-for-7 with a walk, one run scored and a RBI while Koller recorded three hits and two RBIs.
Thiel (12-18, 6-12 PAC) will return to action Monday when they travel to Alliance, Ohio to take on the University of Mount Union. The non-conference game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
