Tomcats rally past Bearcats for series win

Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. - The Thiel College baseball team totaled 14 hits in a 10-6 Presidents' Athletic Conference win over the Saint Vincent College Bearcats Sunday at Tomcat Park.

With the win, Thiel takes their first PAC series and improves to 11-15 overall, while the Bearcats fall to 11-16.

Five Tomcats collected at least two hits in the win. Sophomore first baseman Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs and sophomore designated hitter Sam Passafiume (Medina, Ohio/Medina), who entered the game in the sixth as a pinch-hitter, went 2-for-2 with a triple, a run scored and two driven in as the Tomcats registered their tenth double-digit hit total this season.

In addition to Smith and Passafiume, junior shortstop Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin), sophomore left fielder Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) and senior right fielder Nick Schiavoni (Boiling Spring, Pa./Trinity) each recorded two hits.

Thiel busted through for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 6-5 lead. Sophomore second baseman Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) led off the inning with a walk before Schiavoni moved him to second with a single to right field. Smith followed with a single to left center to clear the bases and cut the Bearcats lead to 5-2. After back-to-back outs, Mitchell hit an infield single that scored Schiavoni. Max Gunn (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) subsequently walked on four straight pitches to load the bases and head coach Joe Schaly called on Passafiume to hit for center fielder Brian Snyder (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson). Passafiume came through in the clutch, fighting off pitch after pitch until he roped a single into right center to score two and tie the contest, 5-5. Trinch then gave Thiel its first lead of the day with a RBI-single down the left field line, making it 6-5 in favor of the home team.

Saint Vincent added a run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly to tie the game, 6-6.

The Tomcat bats went back to work in the bottom of the seventh, as RBI-singles by Smith and Mitchell gave Thiel a lead that they never surrendered.

Sophomore reliever Pat Duncan (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) improved to 2-1 on the hill after working three innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits.

The Bearcats produced the first runs of the ballgame in the top of the second to go up 4-0. They added to that lead an inning later, scoring a run on a double to left center by Tanner Master.

The Tomcats got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a run on a Bearcat double play.

Thiel took their first lead of the contest with a five-run sixth, and added to their lead with two runs in the seventh and eighth.

The Tomcats will (hopefully) be back in action tomorrow, April 13, when they travel to Erie, Pa, to take on the Penn State Behrend Lions. First pitch is tentatively scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
