Box Score LATROBE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team took the second game of its three-game set with Saint Vincent College, defeating the Bearcats 10-3 in Saturday's nightcap.
With the win, the Tomcats' fourth in their last five games, Thiel's record jumped up to 10-15 overall. The Bearcats fell to 11-15 for the season. The victory was the Tomcats' most one-sided in Presidents' Athletic Conference play this season, and it got started with a five-run second inning.
Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) led off the top of the second with a single to left field. After he advanced to second on a wild pitch,
Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) moved him over to third with an infield hit.
Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) followed with a RBI-single to left field to score Smith, staking the Tomcats to a 1-0 lead. After a RBI-groundout by
Max Gunn (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) pushed Thiel's lead to two,
Brian Snyder (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) laced a pitch into center for a single that scored Mitchell for the third run of the inning. After Snyder stole second,
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) singled him home. Trinch later came around to score on a
Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) RBI-single to right center for the Tomcats fifth run of the contest.
In the third inning, the Tomcats added two more runs, scoring both in unconventional ways. With runners on first and second with one out,
Max Gunn (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) struck out swinging, but a dropped third strike and a subsequent fielding error by the Bearcats catcher allowed Mitchell to race around from second and put Thiel ahead 6-0. For the second run of the inning, Gunn got caught in a rundown at second, allowing Elko to score before the tag was applied.
The Bearcats drew to within four in the bottom of the third, utilizing three hits and two walks to manufacture three runs.
The Tomcats put the final touches on the victory with a three-run sixth inning. With two runners on, Gunn smacked a single that moved his team ahead 8-3. Two batters later, Doody doubled home a pair of runs to close out the scoring for Thiel.
The Tomcats not only out-hit the Bearcats 14-5, but were helped out by three Saint Vincent errors. That was more than enough offense for the pitching trio of
Alex Yoder (Canton, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas),
Pat Duncan (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) and
Riley Schwertz (Zelienople, Pa./Freedom). Yoder threw five innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk to earn the decision and improve to 2-1 on the season. Duncan threw a perfect sixth, and Schwertz tossed the final inning of the game, giving up just one hit while striking out one.
Thiel was led by Smith, who went 3-for-4 with a run scored. All nine Tomcats in the starting lineup registered at least one hit in the win.
The Tomcats return to Greenville tomorrow for a nine-inning game against Saint Vincent. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
