Box Score FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Thiel College baseball team registered a season-high 14 hits, slugging their way past the Wilmington College Quakers 8-4 Wednesday at Terry Park.
The win improves the Tomcats to 2-2 for the year, while the loss dropped the Quakers record to 0-7.
The Tomcats totaled 14 base hits, four of which went for extra bases, with seven of Thiel's starting nine recording at least one hit.
Four Tomcats finished with at least two base hits, including sophomores
Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and
Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin). Koller went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs driven in while
Smith was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and one driven in. It is the third double-digit hit total for Thiel's offense this season.
In addition to Koller and Smith, junior shortstop
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and sophomore left fielder
Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) also tallied multi-hit games, with Trinch going 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored while Mitchell was 2-for-5 with a triple, two runs scored and two driven in.
Thiel got on the scoreboard early, taking advantage of five hits and a Quaker error to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Smith led off with a single through the right side of the infield before Trinch's one-out double put runners on second and third for Mitchell. The Padua Franciscan product got the job done with a RBI-single into left field, giving Thiel its first run of the contest. Mitchell then stole second, and later scored on a two-run single up the middle by Koller.
After Wilmington manufactured a run on a hit batsman and two errors in the bottom of the fourth, the Tomcats added a four spot in the top of the fifth to make the score 7-1 in favor of the visitors. Â
Sophomore second baseman
Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) led off the fifth with a walk, and scored on senior right fielder
Nick Schiavoni (Boiling Spring, Pa./Trinity)'s single into center field. Schiavoni then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, eventually scoring on a double off the bat of Smith. The Franklin, Pa. native, who recorded his third multi-hit effort in four games this season, is now hitting .562 (9-for-16) with four RBIs and four runs scored. Mitchell's RBI-triple and Koller's RBI-single to left highlighted the rest of the scoring in the fifth frame for Thiel.
Wilmington threatened with a three-run sixth, aided by three hits and a Tomcat error, but could get no closer.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Alex Yoder (Canton, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas) earned his first collegiate win on the hill since March 17, 2012, allowing four runs, none of which were earned, in six innings of work. The right-hander from Canton, Ohio didn't surrender a hit until the fifth inning, when a two-out single broke up his no-hit bid. In all, Yoder threw 88 pitches, scattering three hits and striking out four.
Fellow sophomore pitcher
Pat Duncan (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) threw three innings of scoreless, one-hit relief to record his first save of the season.
Sophomore right-hander Luke Matthews took the loss for Wilmington, throwing four innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with a walk.
Thiel produced the first three runs of the ballgame in the top of the second to go up 3-0. With one out and two on base, Mitchell singled to left field to score Smith and Koller later singled to score two.
Wilmington scored its first run to cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Ryan Henning's RBI-groundout got the Quakers on the board.
Thiel answered with three runs in the top of the fifth to up their lead to 7-1.

The Quakers again answered with three runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the sixth, but the Tomcats responded with an insurance run in the top of the eighth to put the game out of reach.Â
The Tomcats will be back in action early Thursday when they take on the Illinois College Blueboys at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.
