Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, Pa. –The Thiel College baseball team suffered a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference losses to the Thomas More Saints Sunday at Washington and Jefferson College's Ross Memorial Park.
Thiel dropped its first game of the day to the Saints 10-5 before falling 6-2 in the nightcap.
The Saints scored first in game one, managing to score a run on three walks and a fielder's choice in the top of the first for the 1-0 lead. The Tomcats got to work in the bottom of the second as
Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City) was plunked by a 2-0 pitch. Doody advanced to third on a Saints' error, and later scored on a double play ball to tie up the game 1-1.
The Saints regained the lead for good in the top of the fourth, as Jason Handley connected on a three-run home run to put Thomas More ahead, 4-1.
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) led the Tomcats at the plate in game one, going 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs.
Nick Schiavoni (Boiling Spring, Pa./Trinity) went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.
Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) (2-2) took the loss in game one. He allowed five earned runs in five innings. The lefty from Middlefield, Ohio struck out three and issued three walks.
Tim Baldrick allowed five earned runs on six hits over six and a third innings against the Tomcats to improve to 2-0 on the season.
The second game of the day saw Thiel take an early one run lead, but were undone by a four run third inning by the Saints.
Like they did in game one, the Tomcats took an early lead against the Saints when
a sacrifice fly by Brian Genco (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) plated the first run of the game in the top of the first. Thomas More responded with four runs on four hits in the top of the third to stake claim to a 4-1 lead.
The Tomcats chipped away at the Saints lead with a RBI-groundout by
Sam Passafiume (Medina, Ohio/Medina) that scored
Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) in the bottom of the third.
After a scoreless fourth, Thomas More added a solo run in the fifth and then the seventh to seal the win.
Trinch went 2-for-4 in game two while
Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) went 1-for-3. The Tomcats and Saints will close out the three game series with a nine-inning game on Monday, March 31 at Tomcat Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
