Tomcats suffer a pair of losses to Grove City

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team suffered a pair of losses to Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Grove City College Saturday at Tomcat Park.
 
Thiel dropped its first game of the day to the Wolverines 4-1 before falling 6-4 in the nightcap.
 
The Wolverines scored first in game one, managing to score a run on no hits in the top of the first for the 1-0 lead. The Tomcats got to work in the bottom of the second as Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) singled to advance Sam Passafiume (Medina, Ohio/Medina) to third. Trinch stole second, and Passafiume scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, 1-1.

The Wolverines regained the lead for good in the top of the fourth, scoring a single run, and adding two more in the fifth to secure the win.

Trinch led the Tomcats at the plate in game one, going 2-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base.
 
Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) suffered the loss in game one. He allowed three earned runs in five innings. A southpaw, Elko struck out seven and issued four walks.
 
Mason Stephens allowed just one earned run on three hits against the Tomcats. He struck out four batters and allowed three walks.
 
The second game of the day was a back-and-forth struggle between the Tomcats and the Wolverines, who scored three runs in the top of the seventh for the 6-4 win.
 
Like they did in game one, the Wolverines took an early lead against the Tomcats when a sacrifice fly by Nolan Myers plated the first run of the game in the top of the first.
 
Thiel responded with three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) got the inning started with a one-out single down the left field line. Nick Schiavoni (Boiling Spring, Pa./Trinity) followed with a single of his own, and Brian Genco (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) moved the runners to second and third with two outs for Austin Van Hoy (Ocean Side, Calif./Ocean Side). Van Hoy reached on a throwing error by the Wolverines, scoring both Koller and Schiavoni. Van Hoy stole second and later scored on a RBI-single by Josh Doody (Grove City, Pa. /Grove City).

The Wolverines managed to tie up the game 3-3, scoring two runs on two hits in the top of the fifth.

After a scoreless sixth, Grove City added three more runs in the top of the seventh to seal the win.

Schiavoni went 2-for-3 in game two with a double and two runs scored. Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) also notched a multi-hit game going 2-for-4.
 
The Tomcats (5-6) return to action on Tuesday, March 25 when they host Hiram College. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
