WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Thiel College baseball team's season came to an end Friday night after it lost a rain-soaked elimination game 5-4 to fourth-seeded Saint Vincent College at Ross Memorial Park.
Thiel, the tournament's No. 2 seed, is eliminated after dropping its opening game of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament 14-1 to Thomas More Thursday. The Tomcats finish their season 24-18 overall with a 16-7 mark in the PAC this season.
Senior Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler) and Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) each had a solo home run to lead Thiel at the plate. Sophomore Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) was 3-for-4 from the plate and 4-for-7 combined in the two games. Thiel nearly climbed out of a 5-3 hole in the ninth inning, as pinch-hitter Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) ripped an RBI-double to left field with two-outs, but was stranded at third after Gary Gerhardt struck out the final batter to end the threat and the game.
Thiel pounded 12 hits against the Bearcats, but left five runners stranded. In their two PAC Tournament games, the Tomcats had 19 hits, but left a combined 11 runners on base.
Senior Cody Northcott (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) (8-4) took the loss after he gave up five earned and walked three in eight innings. The loss is the first in PAC play for Northcott, who fell to 7-1 in conference.
Saint Vincent's Jared Haller improved to 6-3 on the year after he scattered 11 hits in eight and two third innings and allowed four runs. Gary Gerhardt allowed one hit and struck out one to record his first save of the season.
Senior Nick Rossmiller (Butler, Pa./Butler) and freshman Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) added two hits, while senior Jarod Nanna (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh) and sophomore Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) each added a hit.
