Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) hit a grand slam in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough for the Thiel College baseball team, which lost a 9-6 non-conference game to La Roche College Wednesday afternoon in 12 innings at Tomcat Park on the Thiel College campus.
The La Roche Redhawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead through 5.5 innings. They picked up two runs in the third, one run in the second and two more runs in the top of the sixth frame.
The Tomcats closed the gap to 5-1 when
Nick Rossmiller (Butler, Pa./Butler) led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a triple to right field and scored moments later when
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) grounded out to second base.
Thiel went on to take the lead, 6-5, in seventh inning on Trinch's RBI-single to right field and a grand slam by sophomore third baseman
Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush), who blasted a 1-0 pitch over the right center field fence. The Redhawks came right back and tied up the game up, 6-6, in the eighth on an RBI-single by Anthony Girdano.
La Roche eventually broke the tie and earned the win, 9-6, with a 3-run 12
th inning.
Rossmiller led the Tomcats at the plate with a 3-for-5 day while
Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg),
Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and Mosley collected two hits apiece. Girdano, Sean Lubin, and Tyler Craig led the Redhawks with three hits apiece.
Pat Duncan (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) took the loss. He pitched six innings of relief, allowing four runs, two of which were earned, on 10 hits. He struck out two and walked three. Ian Kelly picked up the win. He threw four innings of relief without allowing a hit or a run with three strikeouts.
The Tomcats (9-9, 4-1 PAC) will return to action Friday when they travel to Beaver Falls, Pa. to take on the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes in a nine-inning PAC contest.
