Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team dropped an 11-9 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest against Westminster College Sunday afternoon.
The loss dropped the Tomcats to 18-15 on the season and 11-6 in PAC play. The Titans improved to 13-18 on the year with a 5-10 mark in conference action.
The game was a tight one throughout, with Thiel staking a five-run lead through the first three innings, with a two-run double by
Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic), a RBI-single by
Nick Schiavoni (Boiling Spring, Pa./Trinity) and a pair of sacrifice flies doing the damage for Thiel. Westminster responded in the top of the fourth, scoring six runs on six hits to take a 6-5 lead.
In the home half of the fourth, Thiel retook the lead as
Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) led things off with a single to center field. Designated hitter
Jarod Nanna (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh) scored Steininger with a double to deep left center, and came around to score on a fielder's choice that gave Thiel a 7-6 lead.
Thiel added a run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by
Doug Farley (Linesville, Pa./Linesville) to push their lead to 8-6.
The Titans, however, pieced together five runs on four hits and two walks in the top of the eighth to stake an 11-8 lead. Thiel added a run in the eighth when Nanna connected for his fourth home run of the season- a solo-shot to deep left field, but it wasn't enough.
Nanna had a particularly productive series against the Titans, as he went 6-for-11 (.545) with two home runs, a double, seven RBIs and six runs scored in the three-game set. He went 2-for-4 with a double and home run on Sunday, and his 36 RBIs trails only Cody Makin of Thomas More (37) for tops in the PAC.
Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler) and
Nick Rossmiller (Butler, Pa./Butler) pounded out three hits each in the loss to lead the home team. Nanna drove in a team-high three runs. Farley, Koller and Schiavoni each had a pair of RBIs.
Matt Elko (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) suffered the loss on the mound after relieving starting pitcher
Parker Meyers (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park). Meyers went seven-innings, scattering eight earned runs on 11 hits while striking out four. Elko, in relief of Meyers, lasted just two-third innings, giving up three runs on three hits and hitting a batter.
Riley Schwertz (Zelienople, Pa./Freedom) relieved Elko, surrendering just one hit in an inning and a third.
The Tomcats will finish up their three game series with Waynesburg University on Wednesday, as they head to Waynesburg to take on the Yellow Jackets in a nine-inning contest set to get under way at 3 p.m.
