Box Score BETHANY, W.Va. – Starting pitcher
Nick Rossmiller (Butler, Pa./Butler) won his fifth game of the spring on Tuesday afternoon as the Tomcats downed Bethany College, 3-0, in game one of a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader.
The win improves the Tomcats to 8-8 on the season, and 3-1 in PAC play. The Bison fall to 3-9 and 1-6 in the PAC.
Thiel held the advantage from start to finish, but put the nail in the Bisons' proverbial coffin when
Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) ripped a solo homer run, his first of the year, to left center in the top of the fifth to put the Tomcats up 3-0.
Rossmiller allowed just one hit, a single in the bottom of the second, in seven innings of work to improve to 5-1 on the young season. The senior struck out six and walked two for his third complete game shutout of the season.
The Tomcat offense pounded out seven hits on the afternoon, led by the senior Steininger, who went 3-for-4, with a home run, a double, two runs scored and a RBI. Steininger finished just a triple shy of the cycle, flying out to the first basemen in foul ground in his fourth and final at-bat of game one. Sophomore
Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) also played a pivotal role in the Thiel offense, notching two hits, a double and a single while also stealing a base.
Seniors
Jarod Nanna (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh) and
Doug Farley (Linesville, Pa./Linesville) each collected a base hit for the Tomcats.
Thiel will look to make it two straight against the Bison, with game two scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
