Sacrifice Fly in the eighth inning gives Spartans win over Thiel

Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. – A sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning allowed Case Western's Brett Ossola to score from third to give the Spartans a 7-5 win over Thiel College in non-conference baseball action Saturday afternoon.

The loss overshadowed outstanding offensive outings by Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) and Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin).

Steininger continued his recent tear by going 2-for-5 with a triple, one run scored and a RBI, extending his hit streak to 15 games in the process. Smith posted a 2-for-5 day as well, adding two RBIs.

Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler) scored two of the Tomcat runs.

Thiel led, 4-3, through five innings before Case Western took its first lead of the game by posting two runs in the top of the sixth.

The Tomcats scored a run in the bottom of the sixth on Steininger's RBI triple right center before Ossola's decisive run in the top of the eighth. The Spartans added an insurance run in the top of the ninth.

Riley Schwertz (Zelienople, Pa./Freedom) took the loss for Thiel, while Case Western's Josh Suvak earned his second win of the season.

Thiel (7-8) returns to action Tuesday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bethany College.  First pitch against the Bison is scheduled for 1 p.m.
