Six-run eighth inning lifts Gators past Tomcats

Box Score GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team was defeated by the Gators of Allegheny College 10-5 on Friday evening at Tomcat Park.

The Tomcats were undone by big innings for the Gators, as Allegheny accounted for nine of their 10 runs in just two innings. 

Allegheny got on the board first in the top of the second inning, scoring three runs on three hits in the frame. The scoring was highlighted by a two-run single by senior Frank Triozzi to make the score 3-0 in favor of the visitors.

The Tomcats answered with a four-run inning of their own in the bottom of the sixth, as Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) tripled to left center to score Doug Farley (Linesville, Pa./Linesville) and make it 3-1.
Nick Schiavonni singled down the left field line on the next pitch to score Mosley and bridge the gap to 3-2. After a Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) single, Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler) scored both Schiavonni and Koller on a double to the fence in right center, giving the Tomcats a 4-3 lead.


Both sides were held scoreless in the seventh, and the Tomcats and starting pitcher Nick Rossmiller (Butler, Pa./Butler) headed to the eighth clinging to a 4-3 lead.

The Gators however, had plans of their own, scoring six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the eighth inning. The big hit came on a two-run double by Mike Pezzone. With the six runs, the Gators took a commanding 9-4 lead.

Both teams added a run a piece in the ninth inning, with a Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) RBI single accounting for the Tomcats final run of the game.

King led the way for Thiel, going two-for-four at the plate with a double, a walk and two RBIs. Mosley finished the game 3-for-5 with a triple, a run scored and a RBI.


Rossmiller (4-1) took the loss, throwing seven innings, allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits while striking out three.

Thiel will be back in action on Saturday March 30 when they host Case Western Reserve for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
