Thiel baseball takes two of three from Thomas More

First time since 2007-08 Thiel takes two out of three from the Saints

Box Score 1 CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – Senior Cody Northcott (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) picked up his second win on the hill over four and one-third innings to help the Thiel College baseball team defeat Thomas More in the first game in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) twin-bill Saturday.

The victory and subsequent 6-2 Saints win in the nightcap, gives the Tomcats (7-5, 2-1) their first three-game series win over Thomas More since May 2007.

The Saints struck first in game one, scoring three runs on four hits in the bottom of the second. The Tomcats answered in top of the third. A pair of doubles and a two-run home run down the left field line by Jarod Nanna (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh), his first of the season, tied the game at 3-3.

In the fourth, Thiel went ahead for good. Sophomore Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) doubled home Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and Nick Schiavoni (Boiling Spring, Pa./Trinity) followed with a RBI- single to left, to give the Tomcats a commanding 5-3 lead.

After the Saints scored a run off of Northcott and loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, freshman Parker Meyers (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) got the ball from Coach Joe Schaly and promptly retired eight of the 10 batters he faced en route to his second save of the season.

Three Tomcats picked up multiple hits in the opener, with Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler), Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) and Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) each going 2-for-4. Steininger's line was particularly impressive, as he racked up two doubles, scoring a run and drew a walk. The two doubles increases his slugging percentage to .652, the second-highest total in the PAC.

In the night-cap, the teams combined for five errors, but Thomas More scored the final five runs in the game to pull away for the 6-2 win. Thiel led early, 2-1 in the top of the third, but the Saints posted a three-run third and later added a two-run fifth to put the game away for good and salvage the series.

Steininger had another big game with the stick, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a RBI. He has now collected at least one hit in all 12 games this season.

Suffering the loss was freshman Jared Nozicka, who started and threw four and two third innings. Meyers didn't allow a hit in one and a third innings pitched in relief.

Thiel is scheduled to return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 27 when they travel to Meadville, Pa. to take on the Allegheny Gators. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
