Thiel baseball powers past Thomas More

Box Score CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – The Tomcat baseball team improved its record to 6-4 after a 10-6 victory over Thomas More Friday in what was the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener for both teams.

Thiel started the scoring in the top of the third inning as Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler) singled in Dan Koller (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) to give the Tomcats a 1-0 lead. Thiel added a second run in the third on a RBI groundout by Nick Schiavoni (Boiling Spring, Pa./Trinity), scoring King.

After a Trent Smith (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) single through the right side scored Trent Mosley (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) in the top of the fourth to make it 3-0 Tomcats, the Saints finally got a run off of starting pitcher Nick Rossmiller (Butler, Pa./Butler), who gave up a run for the first time in 13 innings when Thomas More singled to left field to make it 3-1.

Thiel got three runs back in the fifth inning, as a Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) infield single scored Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg). Trinch eventually scored on Mosley's second home run of the season, a shot to left field that put the Tomcats up 6-1.

In the top of the sixth, the Tomcats got another two runs, scoring on a wild pitch and a fielder's choice to increase their lead to 8-1.

After the Saints got back into the game with a five-run bottom of the seventh, Thiel finished off their scoring with a two-run inning in the top of the eighth. Jarod Nanna (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh) singled up the middle to score King, and eventually scored on a double to left center by Schianvoni.

Offensively, Thiel had three hitters post three-hit games. King went 3-for-6 with a double, three runs scored and a RBI, Steininger went 3-for-4 with a run scored and Smith finished 3-for-5 with a RBI. Mosley also had a good day at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, a stolen base, two runs scored and two RBIs.

On the mound for the Tomcats, Nick Rossmiller (Butler, Pa./Butler) improved to 4-0 on the season after throwing eight and a third innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits, walking just one and striking out four.

Freshman Riley Schwertz (Zelienople, Pa./Freedom) picked up his first collegiate save in relief of Rossmiller, retiring both batters he faced.

The three-game series between the two teams continues tomorrow with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m., with the second game following shortly after the completion of the first.
