GREENVILLE, Pa. – Allegheny College jumped out to an early 3-0 first inning lead and never looked back, edging the Tomcat baseball squad 7-5 in a non-conference matchup Tuesday afternoon at Tomcat Park.

Brandon Ellis picked up his first victory of the season for Allegheny (6-15), giving up two runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. Paul Vojtek earned his second save of the season, working scoreless eighth and ninth innings.

Brad Bates (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger) suffered the loss for Thiel, giving up five runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Mike Pica (Monessen, Pa./Monessen) allowed two runs in 4.0 innings of relief work.

Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) went 2-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored while Doug Farley (Linesville, Pa./Linesville) 2-for-5 with a run scored. In his first start of the season Bobby Hillier (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark) finished 1-for-3 with a run.

Kyle Davis' leadoff triple set the tone early for the Gators, sending seven to the plate in its three-run first.

A Dan Gainey (Girard, Ohio/Girard) RBI groundout in the bottom of the third brought Thiel (9-12) to within two runs, 3-1.

The Gators notched a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, to extend their lead to six, 7-1.

Steininger led off the bottom of the six with a home run to left field, his first of the season, to tally the Tomcat's second run of the contest. A three-error seventh helped Thiel score three to trim the Gator lead to two, 7-5. Vojtek limited Tomcat batters to just two hits in their final six outs to preserve the Allegheny victory.

Thiel returns to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action on Thursday, April 5 when it hosts Waynesburg University. First pitch of Thursday's single nine-inning contest is slated for 3 p.m.
