WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Tomcat baseball squad dropped a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games Tuesday afternoon, falling to Washington & Jefferson College 3-2 and 13-4 at Ross Memorial Park in Washington.
The Presidents (21-4, 12-2 PAC) erased an early 1-0 Tomcat lead in game one with a three-run second to assume a 3-1 advantage. An
Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) RBI double in the third brought Thiel (12-18, 5-9 PAC) to within one, 3-2, but W&J pitchers would limit Thiel to just two hits over the final four frames to preserve the one-run victory.
Nick Rossmiller (Butler, Pa./Butler) fell to 5-2 on the season, allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks in the complete-game loss.
Doug Farley (Linesville, Pa./Linesville) finished 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored while Steininger collected a pair of RBI.
David Trushel improved to 7-1 after giving up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts in the complete-game victory. Josh Staniscia went 2-for-3 and Scott Liller and Scott Brady each had a RBI in the win.
The Presidents wasted little time to take control of game two, scoring three runs in first, second and third innings to carry a 9-0 lead into the fourth. A
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) one-out, three-run triple in the fifth got the Tomcats on the board, but W&J would tally three more runs in the bottom of the fifth and add another in the sixth to secure the win.
Brad Bates (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger) dropped to 2-6 with the loss, allowing nine runs (4 earned) on five hits in 2.1 innings.
Billy Roosa (Salamanca, N.Y./Ellicottville) collected a pair of hits and a RBI while Trinch finished with three RBI, giving him 22 on the season.
Brian O'Neill ran his season record to 4-1 for the Presidents, allowing just four hits while recording five strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Kyle McLain paced the President offense, finishing 2-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored.
Thiel returns to action on Friday, April 20 at PAC rival Grove City College. The single, nine-inning contest is slated to get underway at 3 p.m.
