GREENVILLE, Pa. — The Tomcat baseball team dropped a pair of games to the Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Westminster in the opening weekend of PAC play.
In the first contest, the Tomcats fell in a pitchers dual 3-1. The Titans got on the board first as they took advantage of two Tomcat miscues to take the 1-0 lead.
Thiel came right back in the bottom of the third converting on two Titan errors, as a sacrifice fly by
Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler) scored
Doug Farley (Linesville, Pa./Linesville) to knot the game at one.
Both Westminster's Pat Mulligan and Thiel's
Brad Bates (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger) pitched very well in the next four innings as both pitchers held the teams scoreless and sent the game into extra innings.
In the extra innings, Westminster got on the board as they scored two in the top of the eighth to take the victory in game one 3-1.
Game two looked to be more one sided with the Titans taking a 7-2 cushion into the final frame. However, the Tomcat bats came alive with RBI singles by
Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) and
Billy Roosa (Salamanca, N.Y./Ellicottville). Then, with the bases loaded,
Weston Snyder (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) came though with a two-RBI single to cut the lead to 7-6. However, the Tomcats would come up just short as they fell by the same score.
Snyder led the way for Thiel in game two, hitting 2-for-4 and driving in two RBIs in the game. The Titans were paced by Ethan Yeager and Kyle Allen, who added two RBIs each.
The Tomcats will take a break from PAC play in their next contest as they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. to take on the Redhawks of LaRoche College on Tuesday, March 27. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
