NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Tomcat baseball squad dropped its 2012 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener against Westminster College 3-1 Friday afternoon.
Nick Rossmiller (Butler, Pa./Butler) fell to 3-1 on the season after allowing three runs (1 earned) on seven hits in a complete-game effort.
Thiel (6-7, 0-1) finished with 10 hits and had four batters lead off innings with hits, but stranded 10 base runners in the nine-inning contest.
Weston Snyder (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of singles and a run scored.
Ryan Dixon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) also added a pair of hits.
Justin Prejsnar improved to 3-0 on the season for the Titans, giving up one run (unearned) with five strikeouts in the complete-game win.
Chris Ross and David Schafer each had two hits and a RBI in the win.
Westminster (9-6, 1-0) scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third on Schafer's RBI single. Thiel (6-7, 0-1) evened the score at 1-1 in the fourth thanks to an
Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) sacrifice fly, but the Titans would score the go-ahead run in the fifth and an insurance run in the sixth to notch the victory.
Thiel and Westminster are scheduled to complete the three-game series with a doubleheader at Tomcat Park on Saturday. The opening pitch for game one is slated for 1 p.m.
