FORT MYERS, Fla. – Monmouth College scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to register a 10-8 victory over the Tomcats Wednesday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Classic.
Leading 7-6,
Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) scored on a wild pitch with one out in the top of the eighth to give Thiel (4-4) an 8-6 advantage. Steininger led off the inning with a single to left and finished the afternoon 3-for-4, four runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. He currently has six multi-hit games this season and is hitting .543.
Monmouth (4-3) scored four runs, keyed by a two-out, three-run Ross Donnan double, to pull ahead 10-8.
Donnan went 4-for-5 with two doubles, four RBI and three runs to pace the Fighting Scots. Mitch Johnson finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Brent Burrows earned the win on the mound after relieving starter Chase Harris with two outs in the third inning. Burrows allowed one run on four hits in 5.0 innings. Zach Myers picked up his third save of the season as he secured the final out of the contest.
Cody Trinch (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) went 1-for-3 with two sacrifice hits and three RBI while
Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler) and
Dan Gainey (Girard, Ohio/Girard) each totaled two hits.
Brad Bates (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger) suffered the loss for Thiel, giving up nine runs (9 E) on 11 hits with five strikeouts in 7.2 innings.
Nick Rossmiller (Butler, Pa./Butler) replaced Bates with two outs in the seventh and allowed one run on a pair of hits.
Thiel is back in action on Thursday, March 15 when it takes on Salem State University at the Player Development Complex (field 3) in Fort Myers.
