Tomcats Finish Season With Two Game Sweep Of Bethany

BETHANY, W. Va. – The Tomcat baseball team took both games of a double header against Presidents' Athletic Conference Foe Bethany College in their final two games of the season on Saturday in Bethany.

The Tomcats bats came alive in the first game as they took game one from the Bison 9-5.

The Tomcats got on the board in a hurry in the top of the first inning as they plated three runs in the top of the frame. All three runs came off RBIs by junior Brock Porter (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg), junior Weston Snyder (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) and sophomore Derek Krietzer to give Thiel the 3-0 lead. However, Bethany would answer right back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning highlighted by a two-run single by Dylan Wassel to make the score 3-3.

After trading runs in the first inning, the Tomcats and the Bison would trade runs again in both the third and fourth innings. The Tomcat runs were driven in by Snyder in the third inning and by junior Brock Porter (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) in the fourth, but were answered by the Bison in both innings to make the score 5-5 after four innings of play.

The Tomcats then opened the game up in the top of the fifth inning as they took the lead for good with a three run frame. The first runs came on a two run double down the right field line by senior Luke Johnson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester) and then added the third run on Steininger's second RBI of the day to make the score 8-5.

Thiel would then add another run in the top of the seventh inning on Double's second RBI of the day to go up 9-5 and they would win game one by the same score.

Offensively, the Tomcats were led by Porter, Johnson, and Snyder who all added two RBIs on the day as well as a five-for-five game by Steininger.

Game two was also won by the Tomcats as they defeated the Bison 6-5 in the second game of the double header.

Bethany was able to get on the board first in game two in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Brad Kubis to make the score 1-0.

Thiel came back in the top of the fourth inning with a two run frame on a two-run single by sophomore Ryan Dixon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) which scored senior Jake Thomas (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) and junior Bobby Hillier (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark) to make the score 2-1. Bethany would then take the lead back in the bottom of the frame with two runs of their own to make the score 3-2.

Thiel would then get a boost in the top of the fifth inning on two home runs. The first, a solo shot by Steininger to tie the ball game, and the second, a two-run homer by Snyder. The Snyder home run marked his first of the season and gave the Tomcats the lead 5-3. Thiel would then add another run in the bottom of the sixth on Steininger's second RBI of the game to make the lead 6-3.

The Bison would make a bid for the comeback as they scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but were stopped short by senior pitcher Justin Fiorello (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) and the Tomcats took game two 6-5.

Once again, three Tomcats drove in two RBIs on the day including Snyder, Steininger and Dixon.

With the victories, the Tomcats finished the season with an overall record of 19-19, a four game improvement from last season. They also finished with a conference record of 9-12.
