Tomcat Baseball Falls to Geneva 14-7

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team was defeated by the Golden Tornadoes of Geneva College 14-7 on Tuesday evening in Beaver Falls.

As has been a problem for most of the season for the Tomcats, big innings and errors gave Geneva the victory over Thiel as the Tomcats committed nine errors in the contest and the Golden Tornadoes scored all of their 14 runs in just two innings.

Geneva got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth inning as they scored five runs in the frame on five hits. The scoring was highlighted by a two RBI single by junior Adam Scheiderer to make the score 5-0.

The Tomcats would then come back with one run in the top of the fifth inning on a RBI single by catcher Dan Gainey (Girard, Ohio/Girard) to cut the Golden Tornado lead to 5-1.

The Golden Tornadoes would then expand their lead with a nine run inning in the bottom of the sixth inning. Five Tomcat errors as well as five hits by Geneva led to the nine runs in the inning with the big hit coming on a three-run home run by Joel Gatti. With the nine runs, the Golden Tornadoes took a 14-1 lead.

The Tomcats would attempt a comeback but could only manage six runs over the next three innings. A second RBI single by Gainey and a two RBI hit by junior Brock Porter (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) accounted for three runs in the top of the seventh, and a sacrifice fly by Porter and a two RBI single by sophomore Nick Ferracano (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) led to three runs in the top of the ninth. However, Thiel could get no more runs across as they fell to Geneva 14-7.

Porter led the way for the Tomcats at the plate as he hit three-for-four on the day and drove in three RBIs.

Thiel will be back in action on Wednesday April 27 when they host a nine-inning contest against the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson.
