Tomcats Earn Double Header Sweep of Saint Vincent

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Tomcat baseball team took both games of a double header against PAC rival Saint Vincent on Sunday April 17 at Tomcat Park in Greenville. They won game one by a score of 11-0 and took game two by a 5-4 score.

The Tomcats took the lead in game one in the bottom of the second inning as they plated three runs in the frame. A sacrifice fly by junior Brock Porter (Duncansville, Pa., Hollidaysburg) and RBI singles by sophomores Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa., Leechburg) and Ryan Dixon (Pittsburgh, Pa., Upper St. Clair) accounted for the runs as Thiel jumped out to the 3-0 lead.

Thiel would then add on five more runs in the bottom of the third inning. A two RBI single by Porter and a two RBI Double by junior Weston Snyder (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern), as well as another RBI single from Steininger made the score 8-0.

The Tomcats would add three more runs the rest of the way as sophomore Derek Kreitzer (Kane, Pa., Smethport) added an RBI double in the fourth inning and freshman Keegan Cunningham (Macedonia, Ohio, Trinity) and junior Brenden Lowery (Dover, Ohio, Dover) added RBIs in the sixth inning to give Thiel the 11-0 victory.

On the mound for the Tomcats, senior James Teyssier (McKees Rocks, Pa., Montour) had his best game of the year to date as he threw a complete game three hit shutout to improve his record to 4-2 on the year.

Offensively the Tomcats were led by a three-RBI day by Porter and a 3-for-3 day at the plate for junior Bobby Hillier (Brook Park, Ohio, Midpark) who also scored three runs on the day.

Game two saw a better contest as the Bearcats jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning due to a pair of Tomcat fielding errors. Thiel then came right back in the bottom of the third inning as Hillier cracked his second home run of the season to right-center field to give Thiel the lead 2-1.

The Bearcats then came back with a two-run inning of their own as they plated a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to take back the lead at 3-2.

After Thiel tied the game at three in the bottom of the fifth on a passed ball, the Tomcats then took the lead for good by scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBIs by senior Jake Thomas (Canton, Ohio, Massillon Jackson) and sophomore Jarod Nanna (Johnstown, Pa., Conemaugh) to make the lead 5-3. Saint Vincent would add on run in the top of the seventh but could get no closer as the Tomcats took game two of the double header 5-4.

Thiel got their second quality start of the day by their pitching staff as junior Brad Bates (Kinsman, Ohio, Badger) went the distance giving up just three earned runs while striking out three.

Hillier once again led the way for the Tomcats as he went 2-for-3 with the home run and two RBIs. Steininger also played well in game two as he went 4-for-4 at the plate for the game.

Thiel will be back in action on Tuesday April 19 when they host W&J. The double-header action will be begin at 1 p.m.
