GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team was defeated by a score of 9-6 by Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Grove City College on Thursday at Tomcat Park in Greenville.
Grove City struck quickly in the top of the second inning as an error by the Tomcats kept the inning alive with two outs. The Wolverines then proceeded to score three runs in the inning led by a two RBI single by Scott Moran to give the Wolverines the lead 3-0.
The Tomcats would strike back in the bottom of the frame as they plated two runs of their own in the home half of the inning. Junior catcher
Brock Porter (Duncansville, Pa., Hollidaysburg) scored the first run on a sacrifice fly from senior first baseman
Jake Thomas (Canton, Ohio, Massillon Jackson) and the second run was scored by sophomore designated hitter
Jarod Nanna (Johnstown, Pa., Conemaugh) on an error by the Wolverines to make the score 3-2.
Grove City would then expand their lead to four runs as they would plate another three in the top of the third. The Wolverines had four hits in the inning, all singles and one sacrifice fly to give them the 6-2 lead.
Thiel would once again answer in the bottom of the frame but would only get one run on a RBI single by Nanna which scored sophomore left fielder
Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa., Leechburg) to cut the Wolverine lead to 6-3.
After the Wolverines expanded the lead to 7-3 in the top of the sixth inning, The Tomcats scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on RBI singles by Nanna and junior second baseman
Weston Snyder (Cranesville, Pa., Northwestern) accounted for the runs in the inning and cut the Grove City lead in half at 7-5. However, Grove City was able to get two more runs in the top of the ninth inning to swell the lead to 9-5.
Thiel would add one more run in the bottom of the ninth inning but could get no closer as the Wolverines took the contest by a score of 9-6.
Offensively, Thiel was led by Nanna who went 3-for-5 on the day and drove in a pair of runs. On the opposite side, the Wolverines got balanced scoring as four different players drove in two RBIs each.
On the mound, Kyle Silk kept the Tomcats at bay for most of the contest as he went seven innings while giving up just two earned runs and six hits.
The Tomcat pitching staff combined to give up 18 hits on the day, but just five earned runs as Thiel drops to 2-4 in the PAC after the loss.
Thiel will next be in action on Friday April 15 and Saturday April 16 as they will play a three game series against PAC foe Saint Vincent. Friday's contest in Latrobe is scheduled for 3 p.m.
