Box Score
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- After falling by scores of 5-4 and 4-1 to the Titans yesterday, Thiel ended Westminster's 12 game winning streak with a 6-1 victory on Sunday March 27th at Tomcat Park in Greenville.
Junior Phil Double (Evans City, Pa., Seneca Valley) got the Tomcats (9-6; 1-2 PAC) on the board first in the bottom of the third inning as he drove in senior Luke Johnson (Rochester, Pa., Rochester) and sophomore Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa., Leechburg) with a two-out double to center field to make the score 2-0.
Junior Bobby Hillier (Brook Park, Ohio, Midpark) then led off the bottom of the fourth with a double and was followed by an RBI double by junior Weston Snyder (Cranesville, Pa., Northwestern) which scored Hillier as well as a two-run single by Johnson which scored Snyder and senior Jake Thomas (Canton, Ohio, Massillon Jackson) to make the score 5-0.
Westminster (12-1; 2-1 PAC) would cut the lead to 5-1 in the top of the sixth but the Tomcats would come right back in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI single by Hillier which scored Steininger to round out the scoring and give Thiel the victory 6-1.
Offensively, a group effort led the Tomcat cause as four different players registered RBIs including Johnson and Double (two apiece) as well as Hiller and Snyder (one each). Hillier also frustrated Titan pitching on the day as he reached safely in every at bat which included two doubles, a RBI single and a walk.
On the mound for the Tomcats, junior Brad Bates (Kinsman, Ohio, Badger) continued his solid season as he went eight innings and gave up just seven hits and one run while striking out six Titans. With the solid outing Bates is boasting a team best 1.88 ERA in four appearances on the mound this season.
For the Titans, junior Tim Wiand led the way offensively as he drove in the lone run on the day.
Junior pitcher Vince Iosue started on the mound for Westminster and gave up 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings while allowing five earned runs.
The Tomcats will continue play Next weekend when they will play Geneva College on Friday and Saturday and the University of Mount Union on Sunday. Friday (3 p.m.) will be played in Beaver Falls, and the games on Saturday and Sunday will be played at Tomcat Park. Both home contests are scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time.
