Fiorello, Tomcats Post 7-0 Win over Hiram in Home Opener

GREENVILLE, Pa. – Justin Fiorello (Eastlake, Ohio, Eastlake North) registered his second career complete game shutout Tuesday afternoon at Tomcat Park, leading Thiel College to a 7-0 victory in their 2011 home opener against Hiram College. Fiorello posted seven strikeouts and allowed just two hits in the win over the Terriers. 

Thiel (8-4) assumed a 2-0 lead in the second as Bobby Hillier (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark)'s (Brook Park, Ohio, Midpark) RBI triple scored Jarod Nanna (Johnstown, Pa., Conemaugh) from first before a Terrier passed ball allowed Hillier to score from third.

Hillier scored on a Hiram fielding error after singling in the fourth to up the Tomcat lead to 3-0, and scored again in the sixth on an Eric King (Butler, Pa., Butler) squeeze bunt to push Thiel ahead, 4-0. Luke Johnson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester)'s (Rochester, Pa., Rochester) RBI single scored Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa., Leechburg) and extended the home team's lead to 5-0.

With the bases loaded in the sixth Phil Double (Evans City, Pa., Seneca Valley) reached on an error which scored King from third and gave Thiel a 6-0 lead before a Brock Porter (Duncansville, Pa., Hollidaysburg) sacrifice fly brought home Johnson and closed out the scoring at 7-0.

Hillier continued swinging a hot bat for Thiel, going 4-5 with a RBI and three runs scored and improving his season average to .444. Johnson, Steininger, and Weston Snyder (Cranesville, Pa., Northwestern) each finished with a pair of hits.

Andy Marsh suffered the loss for Hiram (6-4), allowing five runs (4 earned) on 12 hits with three strikeouts and a walk in 7.0 innings. Bubba Thurner replaced Marsh in the eigth and surrendered two runs (0 earned) on one hit with three walks.

Lance Townsend and Torrey Stimson were the only Terriers to register hits on the afternoon.

Thiel will host LaRoche College for a single, nine-inning contest on Wednesday, March 23 at Tomcat Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
