Tomcat Baseball Wins Two At Southeast Ohio Invitational

MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Tomcat baseball team won both games on the day at the Southeast Ohio Invitational as they defeated Muskingum University 7-4 and John Carroll University 9-1 on Saturday.

In the first game of the day the Tomcats defeated the Muskies of Muskingum College by a score of 7-4.
Junior third baseman Bobby Hillier (Brook Park, Ohio, Midpark) got Thiel on the board first with a one out double which scored sophomore designated hitter Jarod Nanna (Johnstown, Pa., Conemaugh) to make the Tomcat lead 1-0.

After the Muskies took the lead in the bottom of the third inning, Thiel regained the lead in the top of the fifth with an RBI single by junior second baseman Weston Snyder (Cranesville, Pa., Northwestern). After a walk to junior catcher Brock Porter (Duncansville, Pa., Hollidaysburg) made the score 3-2 Thiel would then add another run in the top of the fifth on a single by Nanna which scored Snyder to make the score 4-3.

Thiel would add two more runs in the top of the sixth off of the bats of senior outfielder Phil Double (Evans City, Pa., Seneca Valley) and Nanna to make the score 6-3. The Muskies would then fight back to cut the score to 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth.

Porter would then add his first RBI of the day with a double to left field which scored senior outfielder Luke Johnson (Rochester, Pa., Rochester) to make the score 7-4.

Senior Pitcher Justin Fiorello (Eastlake, Ohio, Eastlake North) would come in the bottom of the ninth and shut the door on the Muskies to earn his first save of the season.

Senior Pitcher Josh Russell (Pittsburgh, Pa., Keystone Oaks) continued his hot start of the season as he once again had a quality performance pitching eight innings of work while giving up four runs and striking out six.

Offensively, Thiel was led by Nanna who went 2-4 on the day and drove in two runs.

In the second game of the night, the Tomcats defeated the Blue Streaks of John Carroll in a game continued from Friday night. Thiel won the game 9-1.

John Carroll jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after the top half of the first inning but a wild pitch allowed Snyder to score to tie the game at one in the bottom part of the frame and the rest of the contest would belong to the Tomcats.

In the next eight innings, Thiel would outscore the Blue Streaks 8-0 highlighted by a two-run double by Double in the top of the fourth inning to win the game 9-1.

Offensively, Thiel was led by Double as well as sophomore outfielder Eric Steininger (West Leechburg, Pa., Leechburg) who had two RBIs a piece.

Senior Pitch James Teyssier (McKees Rocks, Pa., Montour) had his best performance of the season on the mound as he went eight strong innings while giving up just five hits and one run.

Thiel will continue play at the Southeast Ohio Invitational Sunday as they take on host Marietta College. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
