LATROBE, Pa. (May 7, 2010) – Sunday's season finale for the Thiel baseball team will double as the rubber match of its three-game set vs. Saint Vincent after the two teams split a Friday doubleheader. Thiel took the first game, 9-3, before falling to the Bearcats in the second game, 5-1.
Four Tomcats recorded multi-hit games in game one, led by
Weston Snyder (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and run scored.
Thiel had to stage some late-inning dramatics to steal the win after falling into a, 3-0, hole after five frames then exploding for seven runs in the top of the sixth. A couple of two-run singles by
Justin Scarpitti (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep.) and
Luke Johnson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester) and a solo home run by Snyder keyed the inning.
Saint Vincent answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but a Tomcat two-spot in the seventh kept the Bearcats at arm's length.
Starting pitcher
James Teyssier (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) earned the win, tossing 5 2/3 innings.
Thiel and Saint Vincent combined for only 13 hits in game two, but only the Bearcats were able to generate much offense.
Scarpitti led Thiel with two hits and drove in
Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler) for the Tomcats' only score of the contest.
Josh Russell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) took the loss for Thiel.
